The Power of Self-Expression

Self-expression is the practice of expressing our thoughts, feelings, and opinions in a safe and healthy way, in a way where we get to know ourselves better and gain a greater understanding of our individual identities. This helps us live more authentically and enhances our overall well-being.

Through self-expression, we can gain insight into what makes us unique and uncover hidden talents or goals that may have otherwise gone unnoticed. It gives us an opportunity to reflect on our experiences and emotions to better understand who we are as individuals.

As a dad, watching Mako on a playground with other kids, it’s clear we all have something valuable to share with the world. Some of us are more resistant when it comes to physical activity, but are clearly more verbal with expression. I try to encourage Mako to play with different forms of self-expression like:

  • Engaging in various forms of art, such as painting, drawing, or sculpting with play dough

  • Playing an instrument, singing, to express feelings and boost creativity.

  • Building, or taking things apart with real tools for hands-on creative expression opportunities

  • Yoga (of course we do physical playtime on the mat! Even at 3 the idea of fostering a deeper connection with the body and playfulness to encourage creative thinking.

By sharing my stories, ideas, and perspectives with Mako, I hope to help empower him as well as he navigates his life’s journey. And this idea of sharing our stories, and ideas spills out into the studio when I encourage my students to think differently, and invite them to share their perspectives, because I’m always learning. Sharing their story or opinion not only provides an opportunity for myself to learn something new about each them, but it also gives them an opportunity to share something about themselves too, creating a powerful connection between two people that wouldn’t exist without self-expression.

Studies have shown that when people feel connected they are happier and healthier than when they don’t feel connected at all. This connection also helps reduce stress levels, which further enhances well-being by promoting feelings of relaxation as well as increased self-worth, self-confidence, and security.

Recently I’ve been posting reels on IG related to concerns of my students and patients using Adobe Express video editor. I’ve been having fun exploring a digital medium for this self-expression, and it’s been really helpful for a lot of people. I’ve always enjoyed making videos, art, and photography, and through this digital world I’ve been able to reach a broader audience. If you are new to this blog, THANK YOU for being here!

The power of self-expression is undeniable; its ability to enhance personal growth while strengthening relationships is unparalleled. Whether it's through talking with friends and family members or engaging in creative outlets like creating videos or writing a blog — taking time out for yourself using various forms of self-expression is essential for living an authentic life full of meaningful connections.

Go forth and Express yourself!
